RZD Celebrates 175 Years
Russian Railways Celebrates 175 Years
The end of October marked 175 years since the first railway opened in Russia. Today, RZD transports over 1 billion passengers a year all accross the Russian territory as well as Europe.
The first railway that was opened 175 years ago connected St. Petersburg with the nearby Tsarskoe Selo, the summer residenc of Russian tsars. The journey was only a bit over 26km and took about half a hour to complete on a train with a steam engine and 8 carriages.
Today Russia has the largest network of railways in the world, with a total length of 85,000 kms! RZD is also one of the largest companies, transporting 1 billion passengers and about 1.3 billion tons of cargo each year. In addition, about 1 million Russians have jobs connected to the railway.
The Russian Railway system and RZD continue to develop and modernize into the future, planning to upgrade infrastructure and methods.
Congratulations to RZD and Russia for 175 successful years of railway transportation.
