Double-decker Train on Moscow - Kazan Route
Double-decker trains gain further popularity in Russia
Double-decker coaches have less than 200 year old history; firstly they were introduced in France in 1870th, and now they are widely recognized solution for growing transportation needs. Double-decker coach is able to extend capacity of a regular carriage from approximately 50 berths to 80 berths, without necessity to add extra carriages or launching additional trains. At the same time, it does not increase amount of personnel and is more energy efficient than any other means.
Construction of the double-decker trains in Russia began in 2012, back then Transmashholding were preparing trains to be ready for the Sochi Olympic Games. They were planned to serve the route Moscow-Adler, and started operating already from 30th of October 2013. Later, in February 2015, double-decker trains were launched on the route Moscow-St.Petersburg, and now, in June 2015, they start to serve route Moscow - Kazan as part of the Firmenniy train # 24/23.
Tickets sales for the first departures in June 2015 were open already in April. Double-decker train #24/23 was included into the dynamic pricing system of State Russian Railways, which means that closer to the departure date tickets are becoming more expensive. Sales for this train are open 60 days in advance, so anyone willing to benefit from the best possible price should make a decision well in advance!
