Siemens trains for Sochi
Siemens builds shuttle trains for 2014 Sochi Olympics.
German company Siemens has completed the first batch of Desiro trains which are currently being supplied to Sochi for the 2014 Olympics. The first train is actually already on its way to Sochi. The trains will be used to transport tourists and sportsmen from the airport in Sochi to the Olympic facilities.
The Desiro trains are typical electric trains but with specific modifications for Russia. The train has the capability of transforming into a conformtable long distance train with all the equipment necessary to compensate for any destination or mileage. The trains also cater to all passengers with disabilities as well as athletes with large luggage.
The train will be delivered to St. Petersburg first, as it needs to undergo several tests in Russia before being sent off to Sochi. Due to the 1520 mm gauge system in Russia, which differs from that of Europe, the train had to be transported by water to St. Petersburg. After testing the remaining 37 Desiro trains will be delivered as well.
The new Desiro trains will be responsible for the route between Sochi and the air terminal, transporting around 60% of all air travelers, which is expected to be about 80,000 people per day!
